In an interview on Focus on the Family, Dr. Larry Crab said this, in response to why we need to be leery of our feelings: "....there are times when things happen inside of me that have nothing to do with the Holy Spirit, and have everything to do with my flesh, everything to do with my irritability and my impatience, my demanding spirit and my sense of entitlement, um … my inappropriate desires. All sorts of things can go on inside of me. And, I have to subordinate the expression of my feelings to the purposes of God. And that means that … not that I’m going to … I think one of the worst things we say to each other is, “Well, I gotta be honest with you.” Rather than saying it that way, because usually that means, I’m gonna let you know exactly how I feel, and you better respond and shape up.
From the Word of God:
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
1 John 3:20
For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
1) Why am I feeling like this?
2) Follow what the Word of God says:
I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. - Ps. 142:1,2
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test? - 2 Cor. 13:5
Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding. - Prov. 2:2
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. - Prov. 4:23
Don't let your feelings dictate your life. Follow the Word of God and be led by the Spirit. Speaking from experience, be practical too. Don't expect to live a joyful life in the Lord if you're not taking care of yourself, physically and spiritually.
