We need to be careful what we believe and teach. Yes, Biblically speaking, love is a command. John 13:34 says, A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. However, it doesn't mean it's automatic. I can acknowledge that's it's a command all day but it doesn't mean my obedience is a given. I still have to decide to love. I still have the option of either loving or not loving. God will not force us to love Him, or others. He commands it, yes. He wants us to, yes. But He wants us to want to! He chooses to love us, not because we are lovable but because He is so loving. This past Sunday, I heard a good sermon. I even remember all three of the main points (that's about my retention capacity). I connected with the preachers passion and message. I felt inspired. And now, it's the weekday. Time for reports, meetings, ancy customers, and everything in between. Sermons have a low shelf life; here today, gone tomorrow (or the next day...or the next). If I want to thrive as a disciple of Jesus Christ and be equipped for all the the 'trouble' a day can bring (Matt. 6:34), I need to walk with Him daily and maintain a balanced spiritual diet.
