Our family mission is to meet with God every day and help others do the same. Do you have a family mission statement? Some people may hear this, especially older generations, and think, What!? What's a mission statement? What's the point? Just follow the Bible and you'll be fine, Stop with this non-sense, etc. A family mission statement is nothing new or progressive. It has been around, in one form or another, since God established the first family (Adam & Eve). A family mission statement helps to answer the question, Why are we here? It is a unifying proclamation that helps guide your daily life and can be adapted throughout the various ages/stages of your family. In Joshua 24:15, we see a short example: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." The idea is to combine your family values with what you feel God called you to do so that you can impact the world around you. Here's why my family has a mission statement:
1. Shared Purpose Our family mission statement brings us together. It helps to answer the question 'Why are we here?' and 'What is our calling?' It's nice when the father or mother knows their role/calling; it's better when the entire family knows! The FMS (Family Mission Statement) let's everyone in the family know, you matter! 2. Vision A family mission statement is for the long haul. It's not seasonal and it's not just for when the children are little. In fact, it's good to review it and change it, if needed, as everyone gets older (and wiser!). By looking to the future, by God's grace, and the end of things, you can live more purposefully in the present. 3. External Impact A family mission is not just for your family. In the statement builder we've designed, you will be asked to think about the people around you that your mission will impact. The actions you take as a family can help or hurt the world around you. Your workplace, your school, your city; they can all be blessed! The family mission statement reminds us that wherever we are, we are His!
