Nicolae Moldoveanu
A WORSHIPPER IN SPIRIT & TRUTH
[ February 3, 1922 - July 12, 2007 ]
Nicolae was the son of John and Ruxandra Moldoveanu, and husband
of Elena Bogdan (married 1947, Săsciori, Romania).
He was born into a poor family and lost his father at age 3½.
At age 12, he entered a military program called the Army’s Children.
He lived on a military base in Transylvania, where he joined a brass ensemble,
playing the trumpet, and learning dulcimer, piano and accordion.
While on military leave in 1935, he went with his mother to a group
called the Lord’s Army, a branch of the Greek Orthodox Church.
He came to Christ in 1938, and began writing songs,
which were first published in Village’s Light.
Between 1948 and 1959 he worked closely with poet Traian Dorz,
publishing with him Psalms and Hymns, Songs of the Bible
and many other songs and Christian hymns...

In 1948, the new Communist government of Romania outlawed the
Lord’s Army, though the group continued to meet.
In 1959, Moldoveanu was sentenced to 12 years in prison
on false charges of trying to overthrow the government.
While in prison, he met other persecuted Christians such as
Traian Dorz and Richard Wurmbrand. He was released as part of a
general amnesty five years later, but the secret police kept close
watch on him. Despite constant government surveillance,
his lyrics and music spread throughout Romania.
Moldoveanu is said to have written 8,000 songs
in his lifetime, over 300 of them while in prison.

WHAT IS
THE NICOLAE PROJECT?
A SPIRITUAL & MUSICAL JOURNEY
A Preservation Project
The Nicolae Project is my personal endeavor to translate some of Nicolae Moldoveanu's song's from Romanian (original) to English.
Why? Because they are beautiful. The words are birthed from suffering and a personal walk with the Lord Jesus, and they are based on the Word of God. Second, to preserve them. This is not a job for Google Translate. I will use this as a tool but for anyone who has used it long enough, you know that Google Translate does not accurately translate all words & phrases. It will be a manual process in which I'll read through all the verses/refrains.

A Personal Interest
I have been playing his songs for over 20 years. I have notes and bookmarks throughout his published hymn books that I own. I also have a thing for songs that are in a minor key, and many of his are! I used some of his melodies as transitions or introductions in some of my arrangements/original compositions, especially for brass ensemble.
A Passing to the Next Generation
I want to help pass these songs to the younger generation (even my boys) so they can be inspired, connect with the words/melodies and, in so doing, connect with God! They need to be aware of the men and women of faith who have set an example for us in the way they lived, walked with God, studied the Bible, worshipped, and more . Nicolae Moldoveanu is one of those people.
FORMAT
I will be posting portions of the songs (verse/chorus) on my Instagram, @altarpreneur,
in the form of images, videos & stories (samples below).
Feel free to tag & share, or come up with your own!
